‘Gargoyles’ Awaken On The Tabletop

Ravensburger is set to bring the classic Disney cartoon Gargoyles to the tabletop this August!

Look at that beautiful box art!

Honestly, we’re ashamed to say we missed this story when it broke back in February. Ravensburger, publisher of the massive popular Disney Villianous boardgame, will be releasing a new boardgame based on the infamous Gargoyles cartoon.

Per the official announcement:

“In the game, players take on the role of one of six heroes: Goliath, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, Hudson, or Detective Elisa Maza. Working together, they’ll take on Xanatos and Demona in four different scenarios. Players do battle on three-dimensional cityscape board showing Manhattan as it was presented in the cartoon, complete with Xanatos’ castle—topped skyscraper, the police clock tower, and more.”

The scenarios for game sound like they are straight from the show, which makes it all the better!

  • Reawakening: “Players face off against Xanatos and Demona, and must save Coldstone’s mind.”
  • Temptation and Magic: “Demona has stolen the Grimorum Arcanorum and used the magic to enslave innocents.”
  • Information Warfare: “Players must collect three stolen data disks.”
  • Battle with the Steel Clan: “One player takes the role of Xanatos and the Steel Clan and tries to either defeat a hero or destroy the police tower while the other players (as the Gargoyles) try to defeat Xanatos.”

The art on the box looks like the designers are going with the original aesthetics and not trying to modernize it. That is a fantastic thing as a game like this will appeal to those of us olde enough to remember watching the cartoon as it originally air, as well as the whole new generation being introduced to the show thinks to Disney+. Furthermore, the hero characters look to be plastic miniatures, capturing them in perfect detail.

We truly hope we’ll see Xanatos and Demona as miniatures as well. We have a feeling, either way, we’re going to have to get two copies of the game at release so that we can paint up a set of the miniatures.

Gargoyles: Awakening is a family game for 2 to 5 players, ages 10 and up, and looks like it’ll retail for $34.99 when it launches exclusively in Target stores nationwide on August 1.

Bushiroad Deep Dives Back Into ‘Sword Art Online’

Bushiroad has announced that they are returning to the digital world of Sword Art Online with Weiss Schwarz: Sword Art Online – Alicization: War of The Underworld Vol. 2 this October!

Bushiroad included in the announcement that the English SP cards will differ rather significantly from the Japanese cards. On their site, they showcased the differences:

There has been some rather…volatile conversation around the updated SP decisions in that the English edition. Most Weiss Schwarz players are massive fans of the signature cards, hunting through dozens, if not hundreds of packs, to try and acquire the stamped cards of their favorite characters and their respective voice actors. Several have found the new card designs to be lacking.

Honestly, we’re indifferent to the change. On one hand, the signature stamp has been something of a fun hunt through out various Weiss Schwarz sets. We went through our fair share of boxes when Attack on Titan dropped at Gen Con a few years back. On the other hand, we never had the good fortune to be blessed to pull any of the cards. So either way we’re fine with the changes though we know plenty who are not.

What about you? Where do you stand on the new SP changes? Does it bother you enough to not buy any or will you still Link Dive into Sword Art Online once more? Sound off in the comments below and let us know.

More Heroes and Mutants Teased For ‘Marvel Crisis Protocol’

Atomic Mass Games has treated us to two new teases for Marvel Crisis Protocol.

First, we have two missing members of the Avengers that everyone has been asking for- Falcon (in his Captain America rank) and War Machine!

We had been given a small tease to both of these models back in December and Sam’s Captain America reveal was not that long ago. This is, however, our first full glimpse at Rhodey’s War Machine.

War Machine looks like a tank (as he should), and comes in such a more dramatic and character-rich pose. The use of the flame on the base gives the model a flight appearance without the need of a clear plastic peg. This model is leaps and bounds over the Iron Man model from the 2-Player Starter Set.

And with those two hitting the table soon (soonish TM) we will finally have all the Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers in one form or another on the tabletop (not counting the massive army from the end of Avengers End Game). We don’t know about anyone else, but it will be fun to play out the Captain America: Civil War airport battle in epic 40mm scale.

Moving over to the mutant side of the Marvel Universe, AMG has treated us to two new models in the form of Jean Grey and Omega Red!

Jean Grey was first teased all the way back in November when the X-Men made their debut in Marvel Crisis Protocol. She was teased on the X-Men affiliation card (while Juggernaut was teased on the Brotherhood card). Her character card art work (along with Cassandra Nova’s art) was revealed during the “AMG Mini-stravaganza” back in March. Now we have a clear image of what to expect her model to look like.

Once again drawing inspiration from the Jim Lee era of the 90’s X-Men (that inspired the classic Fox cartoon), Jean is posed in a levitated state as she launches a psychic attack against her enemies. We love the representation of her telekinetic energies forming an ‘X’ to be the base she stands on. This is an absolutely gorgeous model.

Finally, we have Omega Red. Also teased during a live-stream painting session during the aforementioned Mini-stravaganza, Omega Red is a long time foe of the X-Men, especially Wolverine.

First thing we noticed is that Omega Red is on a 50mm base. This will give the Brotherhood, presumably, their second figure on a larger base (Magneto being the first and Mister Sinister wasn’t added to the Brotherhood). With his tendrils (modeled excellently and menacingly) we can only imagine that he’ll offer some sort of tie-up abilities similar to Venom. He’s generally depicted as a much more straight-forward bruiser with a high intellect, so it’ll be interesting to see where AMG takes him in terms of powers and abilities.

Also, with Omega Red’d inclusion into the game, we are slowly inching closer to completing the Marvel side of the roster for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (the best of the series). The balls in your court to make it happen, AMG!

So what do you all think? Excited to have more models to assemble and get to the table top? Is your pile of shame growing even in the pandemic so you won’t be getting to these for a while regardless of release? Let us know in the comments below!

’66 Joker Surfs His Way To The Table Top This Month

Knight Models has shown off one of the craziest models to date for the Batman Miniatures Game (3rd Edition) that will be making waves on the tabletop this month (see what we did there?):

The model beautiful (and faithfully) recreates one of Cesar Romero’s most rememberable moments from the 1966 Batman tv series. In the episode “Surf’s Up! Joker’s Under!” (Season 3, Episode 10 – November 16, 1967), the Joker decides he can win over the hearts and minds of the citizens of Gotham if he was able to become King of the Surf. Using a crazy contraption called the “Surfing Experience & Ability Transferometer”, the Joker transfers all the skills and stamina from from Gotham’s top surfer. In the end, the day is saved by Batman beating the Joker on the waves (followed by a beach brawl, of course).

It is awesome seeing Knight Models continuing roll out support for the Batman ’66 line, and any excuse to try to paint a tiny mustache under white clown makeup is fun. It will be a test to the model’s playability and a player’s creative liberties on exactly how well this will translate to the usually dark city boards. Granted, a little green wash over the waves and the Joker is now surfing a tidal wave of Joker Toxin or Bane’s Venom.

Being massive fans of Adam West’s Batman and the colorful villains he went after every week, we can’t wait to get this model painted and on the table.

What do you all think? Looking forward to surfing Crime Alley with the Joker? Or will this one be hanging back for a less whimsical model to take the lead? Sound off in the comments below and let us know.

Until next time, keep your dice warm and happy gaming!

(Yes, yes, we know. We should have ended it with “Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel”, but we already feel bad for the wave pun at the top!)
